Exploring the Colonial Zone: Parque Colón and Ancient Walls

The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo is a treasure of the Dominican Republic, offering a captivating glimpse into the country’s rich history and colonial heritage. As you wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, you’ll be surrounded by beautifully preserved 16th-century architecture, including the iconic Catedral Primada de América, the oldest cathedral in the Americas.
One of the must-visit landmarks in the Colonial Zone is the Parque Colón, a picturesque plaza that is surrounded by some of the city’s most significant colonial-era buildings. Here, you can admire the impressive Baroque facade of the cathedral, as well as the ornate Alcázar de Colón, the former palace of Diego Columbus, the son of the famous explorer.
Adjacent to the Parque Colón, you’ll find the ancient walls and fortifications of the Fortaleza Ozama, a 16th-century fortress that once served as a defensive stronghold for the city. Today, you can explore the imposing stone walls and towers, and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Caribbean Sea.
